How to Avoid Work at Home Scams

Finding a work at home job or business opportunity requires doing your research to avoid being scammed. You may find that many companies offering these kind of opportunities claim to be legitimate, but how do you really know? There are several ways to check the reliability of a company before investing any of your money or time.

1. Do a Google search.

Read through the results of the search on the company to see if there are any negative (or positive) remarks. Often times, people who were scammed by a company will make a note of it on a forum or blog. You can gain great insight and avoid the same mistakes other people have made.

2. Check the Better Business Bureau (BBB).

You can check to see if a company is registered with the BBB. A company must go through a rigorous screening process by the BBB in order to become a member. Also, if there are any complaints made against a BBB registered company, you can find out what the complaint was and how it was resolved.

3. Check Scam-X.

Scam-X is an organization similar to the BBB. In order for companies to become certified by Scam-X they must go through a stringent screening process where the validity of a company is manually checked by a member of Scam-X's staff. If a company has been cleared by Scam-X there will be Scam-X seal displayed on the website.

While doing your research on a company that is offering a work at home job or business opportunity consider the following:
  • If you are asked to pay for something, what exactly are buying? A company should never charge you for a job. The goal is to get paid for a job, not pay someone to give you one.

  • If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is too good to be true. Trust your gut feeling.

  • Does the company claim you will "get rich quick?" As much as we wish it were true, you do not get rich over night unless you win the lottery.
